KLANG: Bersih 2.0 remains an illegal entity as it is not registered with the Registrar of Societies.
“It has never been registered, so it remains as an illegal organisation,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
On Bersih's plan to hold a rally in Stadium Merdeka, Najib said the party that applied for the permit must be a registered organisation.
“We leave it to the police to decide in the interest of safety. If an official application is made, then the organiser must abide by the conditions,” he told reporters here yesterday.
In Putrajaya, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said just because the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin had consented to meet with Bersih 2.0 steering committee chairman Datuk S. Ambiga, that did not make the organisation legal.
“Just because Tuanku met them doesn't mean they are no longer illegal,” he said.
Bersih was declared illegal on June 1 after the Registrar of Society found it had contravened the Societies Act 1966.
